FULLERS REVIEW — TIM

A glorious sampling of short stories from across Chekhov’s career. Unusually, it eschews many of the longer, more famous stories (so you won’t find ‘The Lady with the Little Dog’ or ‘The Steppe’ in here), and instead concentrates on little stories. Averaging under 10 pages each, this is a great volume for dipping into, as I did the other evening when I couldn’t sleep. Many of the early stories in particular are essentially just jokes — apparently he would dash them off, several a day, to support his family and put himself through medical school. (Oh, to be a genius.) For example, it opens with a satire on the desire for fifteen minutes of fame: a young man rushes home to gush to his parents that he’s world-famous, because he’s just discovered a story in the newspaper about him getting run over by a carriage while he was drunk…

Description

Chekhov's genius left an indelible impact on every literary form in which he wrote, but none more so than short fiction. Now renowned translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky give us their superb renderings of fifty-two Chekhov stories. These stories, which span the full arc of his career, reveal the extraordinary variety of his work, from the farcically comic to the darkly complex. Including several never-before-translated stories, this is a collection that promises to delight.
