This is a slender glory. Mendelsohn meditates on fate and exile and narrative, looking at how these things are (and can be) represented in literature, with a particular eye on the lives and works of Erich Auerbach, François Fénelon, and W G Sebald. There’s also wonderful stuff in here on a surprisingly wide range of books and writers from Homer’s Odyssey to Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Highly recommended.
