Enterprise Risk And Ruin: The Stage Coach And The Development Of Van Diemen's Land And TasmaniaStock informationGeneral Fields
Special Fields
DescriptionSteven Walker is a retired F111 pilot who restored a coaching inn at Oatlands, studied for a PhD and wrote the most entertaining and informative history of Tasmania more or less all at once. The stage-coach was major 19thC infrastructure and its development is the story of communication, growth and entrepreneurial competition. Stage-coaches were targets for bush rangers, run by monopolists, operated through the night and required thousands of horses and tonnes of feed. The first case of road rage in Tasmania is detailed here, and three of the successful coach operators were women. This is not only an economic history it is great fun and full of great Tasmanian characters. |
